Abstract

The study aimed: (1) to study the concept of the House’s chaos in the Theravada Buddhist Scriptures, (2) to study the House’s chaos of the Lumklong Nang Noi community; and (3) to analyze the House’s chaos of the community of Lumklong Nang Noi, based on Buddhism. A qualitative research was conducted on fieldwork for in-depth interviews and then an interview was analyzed for the completion of the thesis. Findings were as follows:

1) House’s chaos influences the concept and the way of life of the people in the community that believes it is the first thing first occurs prior to its consequence, which is often referred to as "misfortune" and such belief is the personal belief in the community. The performance of the rite is a ritual in the form of sacrifice, and worship requesting the holy things.

2) Lumklong Nang Noi community believes in a supernatural power that causes both advantage and disadvantage rooted from the Brahmanism transmitted to the Buddhism. Similarities and differences in Buddhism and the rite can be found depending on the origin of the ancestor's inheritance. Accordingly, the role of the rite occurs in the form of rituals as It is believed that the person living in the house can be blessed with the rite and the rite can expel evils that cause troublesome. Happiness and prosperity can be promoted after the rite has been performed for people who live in the house.

3) With regard to Buddhism and the rite, differences are clearly found. For example, Buddhism teaches Buddhists to have critical thought and wisdom whereas the house’s chaos mainly focuses on happiness and prosperity of the householders. However, Buddhism still has a role to play with the rite in terms of instructing people to follow the Buddhist teachings. To access and understand the Buddha’s teachings people need to access via the process of the rite. The house’s chaos rite is the instruction strategy concealed in the rite as a medium to lead people to comprehend Buddhist teachings.
